Ben Seymour

Group Leader

Ben is a clinical neuroscientist who's primary research aims to understand how pain is processed in the human brain by using a combination of theoretical and experimental methods. The goal is to build a comprehensive understanding of how the pain system is built and works in humans, and also use this knowledge to design new types of (technology-based) treatment for patients who suffer from pain - the commonest cause of disability worldwide.

Ben did his PhD at UCL (with Ray Dolan and Karl Friston), followed by training in clinical neurology based at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. He moved to the Computational and Biological Learning Lab in at Cambridge as a Wellcome Intermediate Fellow in 2013, spending several years at the Center for Information and Neural Networks in Japan. He moved to the Nuffield Centre for Clinical Neuroscience at Oxford University as a Wellcome Senior Fellow in 2020. He has a joint appointment with the Institute for Biomedical Engineering.
